June 24, 2026/
If you’re planning a trip to Fukushima (福島) and looking for a traditional ryokan experience with a modern touch, staying at Marumine Kanko Hotel (丸峰観光ホテル) is one of the most relaxing ways to experience the beauty of Aizu-Wakamatsu (会津若松). Nestled beside the river in Ashinomaki Onsen (芦ノ牧温泉), this historic onsen hotel combines traditional Japanese hospitality, scenic mountain views, private hot spring baths, and a memorable buffet dinner experience all in one stay.
During our Fukushima road trip, my wife and I stayed for 1 night in the Japanese-Western room with a private onsen, and it ended up becoming one of the highlights of our entire journey through the Tohoku (東北) region.
Whether you’re visiting during cherry blossom season, autumn foliage, or winter snow season, this Marumine Kanko Hotel review and travel guide will help you decide if it’s worth staying here.

Why Stay at Marumine Kanko Hotel?
A Relaxing Onsen Ryokan Experience in Fukushima
Located in the peaceful Ashinomaki Onsen (丸峰観光ホテル) area of Aizu-Wakamatsu (会津若松) in Fukushima Prefecture (福島県), Marumine Kanko Hotel offers a slower and quieter side of Japan compared to major tourist cities like Tokyo (東京) or Osaka (大阪).
One of the things we immediately loved about the hotel was the atmosphere. The surrounding mountains, flowing river, and crisp air made the entire area feel incredibly calming; especially after days of driving around the Fukushima region during sakura season.
Unlike many modern hotels, Marumine Kanko Hotel still retains the charm of a traditional Japanese ryokan while offering spacious modern comforts.
Our Japanese-Western Room With Private Onsen
Checking In and Exploring the Hotel
Marumine Kanko Hotel itself has 3 sections; the main building or Honkan (本館), as well as the Sansui (山翠) and the Annex Kawane (川音) sections that house the more luxurious room. Our room is located at the Annex Kawane building; which we need to cross the bridge from the main building to the Annex Kawane building.
This grand chandelier at the lobby certainly caught our attention.
The interior of the hotel itself is worth admiring at; featuring a unique mix of traditional Japanese and modern hotel design. Near the reception, there is also a souvenir shop where you can purchase local souvenirs of Aizu-Wakamatsu (会津若松).
The lounge area is also spacious with comfortable sofas to seat and enjoy the garden view outside. Next to the lounge is also a gallery displaying a couple of photos the feline stationmasters of Ashinomaki Onsen Station taken at the hotel itself which is actually quite cute! There is also another corner where you can dress up in local historical costumes and snap some photos too.
Why We Chose the Private Onsen Room
For this trip, my wife and I booked the Japanese-Western style room with a private onsen (温泉) bath, and honestly, it was one of the best decisions of the trip. To get to our room, we first walked through the bridge that connects to the Annex Kawane building. The corridor itself features a traditional wooden design that is often seen in the older hotels in Japan.
Upon entering our room, we were then greeted by a mini statue of the Akabeko (赤べこ), the red cow that is the mascot for Aizu-Wakamatsu. In fact, this red cow can be easily found anywhere throughout the region of Aizu-Wakamatsu.
Having a private hot spring bath inside the room meant we could enjoy the onsen experience anytime without worrying about crowds or timing. After a few days of sightseeing around Aizu-Wakamatsu (会津若松), Koriyama (郡山) and Kitakata (喜多方), soaking in the hot spring while overlooking the peaceful scenery was exactly what we needed.
Features of the Room
Traditional tatami seating area with green tea and local snacks provided
Western-style beds for extra comfort together with a large TV
Private open-air onsen bath with a small shower area to wash yourself for before entering the onsen
Large windows with scenic river and mountain views
For rooms with private onsen like ours, the hotel will provide mini towels too for bathing at the private onsen. Guests are also provided with their own yukatas (浴衣), along with the obi (帯) belt and tabi (足袋) which can be wore around the hotel area.
The atmosphere itself was very peaceful; featuring a spacious layout that is perfect for couples or small families. The blend of Japanese aesthetics with modern comfort made the room feel luxurious without losing its authentic charm.
The room itself was extremely spacious and beautifully designed and the beds are very comfortable to sleep on. The room itself also comes with green tea and local snacks as well.
If you’re travelling as a couple/small family and are willing to splurge a little, we highly recommend booking the private onsen room at Marumine Kanko Hotel for the full experience.
One thing that genuinely surprised us was how enjoyable the dinner buffet was at Marumine Kanko Hotel. Buffets at hotels can sometimes feel generic, but this one featured a good variety of Japanese dishes alongside regional Fukushima specialties.
Our dining experience is at the Reiho Hall which is just next to the reception at the main building. To dine in the buffet however, you will need to reserve with the reception in advance first before dinner time; in which they will allocate a time slot for your dinner. Do note that the dinner time ends at 9pm, so be sure to book your slot as soon as you can (locals often eat as early as 6 to 7pm!).
What We Enjoyed at the Buffet
Fresh sashimi
Shabu-shabu with local pork meat
Local Aizu dishes
Seasonal ingredients
Japanese desserts
Free flow of a variety of soft drinks and juices (additional payment is required for alcohol)
What we enjoyed the most are the selection of local delicacies in Fukushima prefecture. My personal favourite dish is the Fukushima beef red wine stew; whereby the tenderness of the beef goes marvelously well with the savoury red wine sauce. After dinner, we headed back to our room and soaked in the private onsen again at night; which honestly became one of our favourite memories from Fukushima.
Public Onsen Facilities at Marumine Kanko Hotel
Besides the private onsen in the room, the hotel also features large public hot spring baths overlooking the river at the foot of the valley. Even if you book the private onsen room, we still recommend trying the public baths at least once because the scenery and atmosphere feel very different (especially the outdoor ones).
Disclaimer: These pictures of the public onsen facilities are taken with special permission obtained from the hotel management. Please do not bring your phone and camera inside the facilities and take pictures of the public onsen as there are other guests using the facilities as well!
The open-air baths especially feel magical during colder weather. In fact, I recommend dipping in the open-air baths at night; as not only is it much cooler but also it’s so soothing listening to the sound of the nearby flowing river.
Also, don’t forget to grab a refreshing glass of milk after your bath from the vending machine right outside the entrance of the onsen.
Alternatively, consider purchasing the Yuttari Aizu Tobu Free Pass which not only covers the return train ride between Tokyo and the Aizu region, unlimited rides at local trains within the Aizu region and also offers discounts at selected shops in tourist areas. Do note that you will still need to purchase the Limited Express Revaty Aizu train separately, as the pass only covers the base fare of the train ride.
Believe it or not, Fukushima Prefecture features some of the most scenic train stations, especially during spring.
By Car (Recommended)
Honestly, we personally feel driving is the best way to explore Fukushima. Having a car gave us the flexibility to visit:
Ouchi-juku (大内宿)
Tsuruga Castle (鶴ヶ城)
Yunokami Onsen (湯野上温泉)
Kitakata (喜多方)
Lake Inawashiro (猪苗代湖)
And other scenic sakura spots across Fukushima prefecture
Relying on public transportation alone would have made our experience much more difficult to visit the above sites given that public transportation is infrequent in the countryside. Keen in renting a car for your next Japan road trip? Check out Tocoo for more info here.
Given Marumine Kanko Hotel is located in a mountainous area, mobile signal can be inconsistent in certain spots; especially when driving between the shrines.
During our trip, having a portable WiFi made our navigation much easier, especially when using Google Maps in remote areas.
Yes; especially if you want to experience a quieter and more traditional side of Japan outside the major tourist cities.
What made the stay memorable wasn’t just the room itself, but the overall atmosphere of Ashinomaki Onsen. The peaceful surroundings, private hot spring bath, relaxing dinner buffet, and slower pace of Fukushima made this stay feel very different from a typical Japan itinerary.
For couples, onsen lovers, or travellers planning a Fukushima road trip, Marumine Kanko Hotel is absolutely worth considering!
The private onsen rooms are popular, especially during sakura and autumn seasons.
Driving Makes the Experience Much Easier
Many of Fukushima’s scenic attractions are spread out (e.g, Tsuruga Castle (鶴ヶ城) and Ouchijuku (大内宿) are 40 minutes apart from each other by car), so having a car gives you much more flexibility.
One mustn't miss out on the unique thatched-roof houses at Ouchijuku.
Stay for at Least 2 Days in the Area
There are many beautiful attractions nearby that deserve more time, especially around Aizu-Wakamatsu and the former post town of Ouchijuku (大内宿).
Visit During Spring or Autumn
Both cherry blossom season and autumn foliage season make the surrounding scenery even more beautiful.
Check out their buffet dinner for the local specialties
Personally, I can’t stress this enough but it is worth dining in their buffet dinner. It’s a great opportunity to try out some of Fukushima’s delicious local delicacies (plus free flow of soft drinks too).
Tsuruga Castle happens to be the tallest castle in the northern area of Japan.
